Melbourne Cup Day is still by far the biggest day on the sporting calendar for TAB customers, with New Zealanders betting more than $23.4 million in 2019, up 2% on last year.
The Melbourne Cup is once again Australia’s Cup after Vow and Declare delivered a thrilling win for local trainer Danny O’Brien and jockey Craig Williams.
More than 83,200 customers placed bets on the day with an enormous 96% of those customers placing a bet on Race 7 at Flemington - the Lexus Melbourne Cup.
TAB turnover for the Melbourne Cup was just under $10 million.
“Melbourne Cup Day is like no other on the racing calendar, and the TAB is proud to be at the heart of that experience for New Zealanders. While we would have preferred a Kiwi horse to take out the Cup, it was fantastic to see so many New Zealanders getting in on the action, through our retail outlets, our app, on track and online,” says Racing Industry Transition Agency Chief Executive John Allen.
“The day is an enormous operational effort for our technology people. At its peak between 4.30pm and 5pm, the TAB was selling an incredible 105 bets per second, up on the same period of last year where 101 bets per second were sold.
“At the same time there were approximately 40,000 customers logged on to tab.co.nz and it was incredibly satisfying to see our new Fixed Odds Betting platform perform without any technology incidents impeding betting despite the enormous demand,” says Allen.
Thoroughbred racing was also held at Ellerslie and Wingatui and turnover on both domestic meetings was up by $1.02 million on 2018.
